Chance of being born, country by country
Every country's share of the world's births, the 1-in-N odds that follow from it, and the life expectancy a person born there can expect.
These odds are calculated from annual births, not population. A country with a young age structure can have a small population and still take a large share of births; an ageing country can be populous and take very few. That is why India (about 1 in 6 births) ranks above China (about 1 in 14), even though both have more than a billion people.
These are the 172 countries the game draws from — every birth is weighted by its share below. Each page shows 16 indicators, world ranks, a regional comparison and what the numbers mean for one life.
