Every life looks
ordinary from inside.

A farm at dawn. A night shift. A new country at seven. None of these people chose the life they were handed. Neither will you.

One roll. One life.

You do not choose the country, the family, or the year. You only decide what to do with the years you get.

Some lives begin with chores, not alarms.

  1. 1

    Be born anywhere

A country is drawn by its real share of the world's births.

  2. 2

    Live your days

A year passes in about 20 seconds. Pause, speed up, or watch.

  3. 3

    Make your choices

School, work, love, leaving home. Choices bend the odds.

  4. 4

    Meet your ending

Death comes from real life tables, not a script.

The numbers are real.

Every draw, every year and every ending is built on public statistics — not a random number generator with a story attached.

Questions

Is 1 in 8 Billion free?
Yes. It is free to play in your browser, with no account and no download. Open the page, draw a birth, and live one life to its end.
How long does one life take?
About 25 to 40 minutes, depending on the pace you choose. A year passes in about 20 seconds at 1×, and you can pause or speed up at any time.
Where does the data come from?
Birth shares, life expectancy and mortality come from UN World Population Prospects 2024 and UN IGME; income, schooling, urbanisation and health spending come from the World Bank, WHO and UNESCO.
Is this the official site?
This is an independent edition. It is not affiliated with 1in8b.life, the original 1 in 8 Billion project.
Is 1 in 8 billion the chance of being born?
No. It is one person's share of the world population. The chance of being born in a particular country depends on that country's share of births — about 1 in 6 in India, 1 in 14 in China, and much smaller in most countries.
What is 1 in 8 billion in percent?
0.0000000125%, or 1.25 × 10⁻¹⁰. As a decimal it is 0.000000000125.
Why do people say “1 in 8 billion”?
Because the world population passed 8 billion in 2022. The phrase is a way to picture one life among all the people alive — a scale, not a probability.
How does the game use the number?
The game draws a country by its real share of annual births, then runs one life year by year using that country's life expectancy, mortality, income and schooling. The 8 billion figure is the theme; births are the mechanism.
Do I have to make every decision?
No. You can let the game choose, or turn on auto and watch. Decisions change the odds, not the destination.
What happens when I die?
You get a life summary: country, age, cause, and the years you lived. You can share a life card or start again. The browser keeps your current life until you clear site data.
Is there an APK or an App Store version?
No. The game is a website. There is no APK, no Google Play listing and no App Store listing. Anything that offers a download under this name is not from us.
Where is my progress saved?
In your browser's local storage, on your device. There is no account and no cloud save. Clearing site data deletes the life.
